National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
NYLT is a six day, five night course that gives Scouts BSA, Sea Scouts and Venturers methods, skills and experiences to become better leaders in their unit. The course centers around the concepts of what a leader must be, what they must know, and what they must do – with a clear focus on how to accomplish all this. NYLT courses are limited to 48 participants.
Participants must hold or intend to hold a unit leadership position to be eligible for the course, and satisfy the following requirements:
- Must be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
- Must have a current BSA Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, and C.
- Scouts BSA members (male and female) must be at least 13 on the first day of the course, and not turn 18 before the last day of the course. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST). Scouts registered in Scouts BSA must have earned the First Class rank before attending NYLT.
- Venturers and Sea Scouts must be at least 14 or 13 and have completed eighth grade on the first day of course, and not turn 21 before the last day of the course. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) or Ships (ILSS). It is recommended that they have had at least one year of camping experience - while NYLT is not an outdoor skills course, it is important that each participant have basic camping and outdoor cooking experience.
- Once Registered, the Participant's Unit Leader will need to email a recommendation letter to the Course Director.
Please register only two scouts per unit. If additional youth wish to attend, Course Director approval is required prior to registering.
This course will have a brief orientation, held on a Sunday afternoon, date TBD, from 1:30p to 5:00p at the Fickett Center, located at 12500 North IH 35, Austin, Texas 78753. All Participants and parents will need to attend the orientation.
