This course of training is a prerequisite if you are pursuing a Rifle Instructor certification.

Description: This course includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions; cleaning, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

NOTE: This course is not for Cub Scout leaders who want to be certified as Cub BB gun range masters.

Limited Exception: Scouts under 21 who plan to work at summer camp in 2019 may attend and be certified as assistant or apprentice instructors, only with the prior approval of Mr. Agnell (

Dates: October 5-6

Times: Friday classes on October 5 will be from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM at the Fickett Center.  The class on October 6 will start at 8:30 AM and end at noon.  The range portion will be done in conjunction with the NRA Rifle Instructor Class on October 19-21

Class Size: This course is open to the first 20 who register and pay the $30 course fee.


Course requirements:

1. Be a registered Scouter age 21 or over;

2. Attend the entire course;

3. Pass a written test and demonstrate shooting ability

4. Each participant must commit to helping at least once each year with a Council, District, Troop or Venture shooting sports activity.
