BSA Aquatics Supervision 2 Paddle Craft Safety Modules

Basic Canoeing and River Canoeing

BSA Paddle Craft Safety expands Safety Afloat training to include the skills, as well as the
knowledge, required for a unit leader to assess whether or not they are qualified to supervise a
canoeing activity. Persons completing the training will have the opportunity to learn the skills to
safely launch, and maneuver a canoe along with planning and rescue techniques.
There are 2 modules of training for canoeing: (1) Basic and (2) River (moving water). The training
modules are open to any registered adult leader, Scout, Varsity, or Venturer, who is age 15 or
older. The Basic Module Paddle Craft Safety is a prerequisite to the River (moving water) Module.
Both training modules are conducted by council approved ACA instructors, takes roughly 8 hours for each
level and is valid for three years. You must be able to pass the BSA swimmer classification to take
this class and pass the final written test to get the card and badge.
Dates/times: Basic Module - Saturday 5/18, 8:00am – 6pm - Lost Pines Scout Reservation (LPSR) Waterfront.
River Module - Sunday 5/19, 8:00am - 6pm Meet at LPSR then put in at Fisherman’s park, Bastrop
In the event of hazardous weather or river conditions, back up dates will be determined by the course directors.
Cost: $65 for one module, $80 for both modules.
Includes: Lunch both days, Dinner Saturday night, and Breakfast Sunday morning
Location: LPSR Waterfront (Day 1) and Colorado River near Bastrop (Day 2)
Registration Deadline: March 14,  2019
Bring your BSA medical form parts A, B required, and C if you have it, swimsuit, sun screen, a long
sleeve shirt for UV protection, towel, water shoes (not crocs). You may also wish to bring a
wetsuit – Lake Bastrop and Colorado River water temps could be in the 50’s to 60’s and air temps
could be 60 to 80 degrees.  A combination of the cool water and a cloudy cool day would require a
wetsuit. We will be camping at Lost Pines so bring your personal camping gear if planning to stay.

Once registered, we will contact students to make arrangements for them to receive reading materials.
