National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

NYLT is a six day, five night course that gives Scouts BSA, Sea  Scouts and Venturers methods, skills and experiences to become better leaders in their unit. The course centers around the concepts of what a leader must be, what they must know, and what they must do – with a clear focus on how to accomplish all this. NYLT courses are limited to 48 participants.

Participants must hold or intend to hold a unit leadership position to be eligible for the course, and satisfy the following requirements:

  • All participants must be 14 years old or 13 years old & finished the 8th grade.
  • If Scouts BSA member, must be First Class rank by the first day of the course
  • For 2019 only, an exception will be granted for girls registered in Scouts BSA to attend NYLT without first achieving the First Class rank; they must still meet age requirements and first attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST.)  This will allow new troops to have trained youth leaders.  Girls who are registered Venturers do not need to achieve the First Class rank, but must attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) prior to participating in NYLT.
  • Not be 18 years old before the last day of the course if Scouts BSA or 21 years old if a Venturer
  • Once Registered, the Scout's Unit Leader will need to email a recommendation letter to the Course Director.
  • Scouts will need to provide proof that they completed their ILST/C/S for their respective Unit type
  • Participants will need to attend a brief Orientation on Sunday afternoon, May 5, 2019, 3:00-4:00PM at the Fickett Center, located at 12500 North IH 35, Austin, Texas 78753.

Each participant must attend the course in its entirety and may not arrive late or leave early. If the participant is asked to leave camp early, no refund will be granted.

You will be asked to create an account to register, then add a Scout participant to complete their profile information if the account holder is an adult.

Once Registered, the Scout's Unit Leader will need to email a recommendation letter to the Course Director.

The Course will be held at Green Dickson Scout Camp, near Shiner, TX.

Feel free to contact the Course Director with any questions.
